Title VIII Research Fellowships

Title VIII provides grants for independent, policy-relevant research abroad in the humanities and social sciences as well as language training.

For scholars and researchers interested in studying Bulgarian language or conducting research in Bulgaria, several opportunities are available through programs administered in the American Councils headquarters office in Washington, DC and implemented by the American Councils Bulgaria office in Sofia.

Funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Program for Research and Training on Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union (Title VIII), the American Councils Research Scholar Program provides full support for graduate students, faculty, and independent scholars seeking to conduct in-country, independent research for three consecutive months to nine consecutive months in Central Asia, Moldova, Russia, the South Caucasus, Southeast Europe, and Ukraine.
